-Smiling people get surprised by pitch rain, are transformed into animalic monsters tarred in shreds of black paper. No longer part of humanity they frighten and vex the viewer.

-Birds shit on these once friendly people changing theyr appearance considerably. Now they are monsters who frighten the observers as well.
